After missing the last two games, Carmelo Anthony is a game-time decision again tonight against the Utah Jazz at the Garden with a sore right knee. Apparently the Knicks have decided not to drain his knee anymore, and are hoping other treatment will work for him.
Joining Melo tonight with a questionable playing status is Amar’e Stoudemire, who has sore knees himself. STAT has had to play slightly more minutes since Melo has been hurt, and that may be the cause of the knee issues. According to Coach Woodson, the decision to play tonight is up to Amar’e Stoudemire, as he will have to decide how he feels before the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if STAT just decided to play through the soreness, but I honestly don’t think that’s something I’d like to see. If there is a risk of further hurting the knees in any way, he should take the night off and rest before the upcoming 5-game road trip. We’ve already seen nothing become something too many times with Amar’e, and the Knicks just can’t afford that coming down the stretch. I would hope the Knicks coaching staff would be smart enough to keep him out if they don’t feel that he’s 100%.
I would expect Melo to miss another game tonight, and for STAT to do the same. I give Amar’e more of a chance to play, but it just doesn’t sound like it would be a very smart move.
If both guys are unable to go tonight, look for some more of the J.R. Smith show. Without the two stars, I wouldn’t be surprised to see J.R. take anywhere between 30-40 shots tonight. Yes, 30-40.
