According to Zach Lowe of Sports Illustrated, the Memphis Grizzlies are talking to teams about trading for Rudy Gay, and one of those teams he proposes that could be a candidate is the Boston Celtics.
Lowe states that the Celtics could trade for the 26-year-old small forward within a deal that would entail Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, and Courtney Lee:
A package of Green, Courtney Lee, and Avery Bradley works, though it only saves Memphis about $1.4 million in salary (and the same amount in tax payments). Memphis might be able to cut the rest by salary-dumping Marreese Speights or Bayless later (Speights isn’t trade-eligible until Jan. 15 and can veto any deal), and they could sell at least Lee and Bradley as helpful pieces that fill needs now and going forward. As much as the Celtics have to assess their rebounding woes, Gay would be a perfect fit and an ideal player for Danny Ainge and company. With Paul Pierce almost on his way out, the six-year swingman could easily fill the void for “The Truth” when father time calls his number and currently could provide a ton of scoring for Doc Rivers’ team,
Currently, yes, this is only talk and a possible scenario, but this could actually happen. At age 26, Rudy Gay can provide leverage and a key part of the green team’s future. And why not have another University of Connecticut alum join the team since it has been well-known in Celtics past (aka Ray Allen).
